A program with the goal of making an opioid overdose reversal medication more accessible is in place in Iowa. Iowans who want to can now obtain free naloxone, a Narcan nasal spray, so they’re prepared if they encounter someone experiencing an opioid overdose. With federal grant funding, those who want naloxone, can participate in a consultation with a University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics pharmacist using a mobile phone platform and then the free kit is mailed to the individual anywhere in Iowa. The program is a partnership of the Iowa Department of Public Health and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, with the aim of reducing the barriers of cost and access for individuals.
