For the first time in 12 seasons, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team will be on the mats in Tim Grady Gymnasium today for a Golden Hawk tournament. Mid-Prairie is hosting the Colton Allen Memorial Invitational today in Wellman. The tournament is named for Allen, who was a Mid-Prairie student that passed away last summer before his senior year. This week, Mid-Prairie head wrestling coach Justin Garvey talked about the opportunity to host a tournament. “When I came here 12 years ago, we did have a home tournament but after my first year here it got scrapped. It’s been something we have been trying to get back for a long time. It’s not an easy thing to just start a tournament, you have to have teams say hey, we are willing to come give you a shot. We have been able to do it this year, and we are pretty excited about it. It’s another chance to be at home for a weekend. Our kids love to wrestle at home and we hope our fans come out for the day.”

Mid-Prairie will be joined on the mat by Alburnett, Benton Community, Iowa Valley, Mediapolis and a junior varsity squad from Ankeny Centennial. Action begins at 10a.m. And continues all day in Wellman.
