It was a Henry County rivalry in Wayland on Saturday to close out the first half of the basketball season and WACO split a doubleheader with Winfield-Mt. Union.
In the girls’ game the Wolves had a strong defensive performance to come away with a 39-29 victory. WMU outscored the Warriors 27-11 in the second and third quarters to build a big lead. Down 33-15 heading into the fourth, WACO made a push but it was too little, too late. WMU forced 14 steals and Kyndal Townsley led them with 11 points while Farrah Nelson had 13 rebounds for the now 5-4 Wolves. Laney Graber had eight points for the 1-8 Warriors.
The WACO boys kept their unblemished record intact with a 56-35 victory where they roared out to a 31-9 halftime advantage. Nik Coble led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Pietro Vannini added 12 points. Juanito Piper, Jared Arnold, and Daunte Oepping each had seven points for the Wolves. WACO heads into the holiday break at a perfect 8-0 and WMU is 2-5.
