Influenza activity in Iowa is below the typical season high, but it is increasing in the Hawkeye State and is already high in other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza-like illness is moderate to high in neighboring states Illinois, Minnesota, and Nebraska. It’s also reached high levels across the south, in the Pacific Northwest, and going up the eastern seaboard.

Annual flu vaccines are recommended to prevent contracting influenza. Washington County Public Health Nurse Lynn Fisher shares there are some steps people can take to prevent the spread of illness, “If you think you’re sick, staying home, trying to contain those germs in your own household. Covering your cough and your sneeze. And washing your hands frequently. And also try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth during this season, it’s an unconscious habit for many people.”

The CDC states that nationwide there were nine influenza-associated pediatric deaths last week, bringing the total this flu season to 19 children dying with influenza-associated illness. So far this season, Iowa has had five adults die from influenza-related illness.
