One person died and another was transported by helicopter from a fiery car wreck near Olds on Christmas night. According to the Iowa State Patrol, at 6:13 p.m. Wednesday two vehicles collided on Highway 218 at School Avenue. A Chrysler Pacifica driven by 65-year-old Robert Lee Sykes II of Iowa City was attempting to go west across the southbound lanes of the highway and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The Pacifica was hit broadside by a Buick Encore driven by 66-year-old Craig Meyocks of Dammeron Valley, Utah.

The Pacifica came to rest in the southbound lanes of Highway 218 and the Encore came to rest in the west ditch. One vehicle caught fire. Sykes was taken by MedForce helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospital. Craig Meyocks, and 64-year-old passenger Brenda Meyocks were taken by Henry County Ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital. Craig Meyocks succumbed to his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol with charges pending.
