Regulations for hemp production in Iowa are being created and the public can weigh in on the process. The open comment period is being held through January 22nd. Last session the state legislature passed legislation to allow hemp production in Iowa. State Senator Kevin Kinney advocated for the measure because he feels it will help the state’s farmers, “Well, anything we can do to give farmers an alternative crop to raise, with corn and soybean prices at break-even prices and so forth, and this may give a farmer an alternative. That’s why we pushed it and we’re trying to get some processing facilities here in Iowa.”

When regulations have been set, farmers can apply for licenses to grow up to 40 acres of hemp per season. Applications will be accepted one the USDA approves the state hemp plan. To take part in the public comment period click here.
