Influenza activity is high across the country and the Centers for Disease Control expects it to continue for weeks to come. In Iowa, there have been 11 influenza-related deaths this season. Washington County Public Health Nurse Lynn Fisher shares ways people can help prevent the spread of illness, “If you think you’re sick, staying home, trying to contain those germs in your own household. Covering your cough and your sneeze. And washing your hands frequently. And also try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth during this season, it’s an unconscious habit for many people.”

Influenza usually comes on suddenly and symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, and some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. The CDC advises that not everyone with influenza will have a fever.
