A local limestone quarry has agreed to pay a $33,500 civil penalty to settle violations of the Clean Water Act. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the violations by River Products Company Inc. were identified during an inspection last April. The company violated the terms of its Clean Water Act permit by failing to develop a pollution prevention plan, failed to install and maintain controls to prevent the runoff of stormwater containing pollutants from the facility, and failed to monitor the runoff of stormwater. The stormwater from the quarry on Dubuque Street in Iowa City discharges into Muddy Creek and the Iowa River. The settlement is subject to a public comment period before it becomes final. Public comments will be accepted through Thursday.
