The Winfield-Mt. Union boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Pekin Panthers Tuesday. The Lady Wolves scored the victory in a defensive battle 39-30. WMU started slow, down 10-4 after one quarter but turned it on in the middle frames, outscoring the Panthers 14-8 in the second and 13-7 in the third to open up a 31-25 lead going to the final period. In the fourth, the Wolves locked down defensively, allowing just five pionts and did enough on the offensive end to secure the victory. WMU was led in the game by Farrah Nelson’s double double of 12 points and 12 boards. With the win the Lady Wolves are now above .500 at 7-6.
The Winfield-Mt. Union boys were on the short end of a 68-44 score. The middle quarters were also the difference in the nightcap with Pekin holding a slim 11-9 lead after one quarter. The Panthers opened things up through the second and third outscoring WMU 46-24 in that span, including 27 points in the second quarter alone. Faced with a 20 plus point deficit the Wolves weren’t able to get back within striking distance in the fourth. Christian Gerot led the way for the Wolves with 14 points, Ty Yocum had 10. With the loss, Winfield-Mt. Union is now 4-7 on the season.
