In order to meet wastewater regulations, the Highland Community School District has to change their whole system. In December, the school found out their ammonia levels were too high for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources likings, so they had to make immediate changes at the high school. This month, Matt Wildman of HR Green submitted the school’s plans to the Iowa DNR and the school board will meet early next week for a project initiation meeting to put the plans of the new system into motion. Superintendent Ken Crawford outlines what the school will need to do for the next few years, “The biggest thing is just we got it started. The facility plan we put out in November or December, we just have to do a progress report next August, submit final plans on what we are going to do next February, 2021. And then award a contract for July 2021 and then get it done by July of 2022.” Crawford is confident the board will go with the Submerged Attached Growth Reactor (SAGR) system and will be able to move forward with the project. The total amount of the new system is estimated to be $900,000.
