The public has been warned by the FBI Omaha Field Office to be on alert of a phone scam that fraudulently displays the FBI’s phone number on caller ID. According to the FBI, the scammer impersonates a government official, threatens arrest, and demands payment of money. The Omaha field office has seen its main number (402)493-8688 spoofed in the scam, as well as numbers of resident agencies and satellite offices throughout Iowa and Nebraska. In some cases, people may be told there is a federal warrant for their arrest and that it’d be dismissed by court in exchange for immediate payment. This is a scam. The FBI will not call or email people to demand money or threaten arrest. More than 12,000 people nationwide reported being victims of government impersonation scams last year with losses of over $112,000,000. Any victims of this or other scams are asked to report it immediately to law enforcement and may do so at www.ic3.gov.
