The top of the Southeast Conference boys’ basketball standings is still occupied by Washington, as the Demons managed a season sweep of Fairfield defeating them last night 62-46.

The win did come at a cost, as Kasen Bailey went down hard on a drive in the second quarter and did not return after leaving the gym in an arm sling. The sophomore guard and Washington’s leading scorer was electric in the first quarter tallying the team’s first 11 points of the game and he finished with 13. With Washington holding a slight four-point lead at the time of the injury, an inspired team followed. Full court pressure and pace of play sped up with the Demons going on a big run to close the half and led 39-23 at the break. Fairfield would not go away in the final 16 minutes, but the Demons held serve for the double-digit victory. Trevor Quigley picked up the slack with a team-high 17 points and Luke Turner was more aggressive offensively to finish with 12. Head Coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports he loved how his team rallied behind Bailey. “It is never something you want to see especially for a kid that has put a lot of gym hours in like Kasen. I was pleased with how our team responded. They didn’t dwell on the play and they proceeded on for Kasen. Our guys understood what happened and they wanted to pick him up.”

Washington improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the league to keep pace with fellow one-loss Keokuk. The Demons have another opportunity in conference on Friday when they host Burlington.
