A review of crime in Washington showed a five-year high of 448 total incidents, including violent crimes and property crimes in 2019. Overall officers had 3,797 total calls for service and 448 were reportable incidents with 355 arrests. The annual report was presented by Police Chief Jim Lester at the recent Washington City Council meeting. He said on average Thursday and Friday have the highest number of incidents, and the month with the most was August. Lester shared the trends for drug offenses, “Drug offenses, this breaks it down from 2015 through 2019 you can see a steady increase there in our drug offenses.” In 2015, the City of Washington had 24 possession of a controlled substance violations and 14 paraphernalia offenses. That more than doubled over the last five years to 60 possession of a controlled substance violations and 34 drug paraphernalia violations. Drugs seized last year included marijuana, methamphetamine, barbiturates, LSD, prescription drugs, heroin, and cocaine.
