The Mid-Prairie wrestling team had a big day at the sectional tournament in Williamsburg Saturday. As a team, the Hawks finished in third place with an overall score of 169 points. Williamsburg was the sectional champion with 273 points, Mount Vernon snagged the other regional dual spot finishing second with 187 points. Mid-Prairie had two champions on the day with junior Vinnie Bowlin at 152 and senior Isaac Boucher at 195. Bowlin was 3-0 on the day, winning the title match by 14-5 major decision over Gable Dayton of Williamsburg. He talked after the tournament about his focus. “The championship match was just another match. I had seen him earlier. I had to establish a takedown and that’s what led me through the whole match. I knew once I took him down that even when we got back to our feet I had another one coming. To finish things out I went more into a leg ride. I was happy with the way I finished, I wasn’t going to get too riled up. The win feels amazing. It thrills you. Gets you ready for next weekend because that’s the one that matters. We have to get back in the room this week. Everything is next weekend now, it’s do or die.”

Boucher was also 3-0 on the day, pinning his way to the title. After an opening round bye he put Tyler Portwood of Williamsburg on his back in 43 seconds and Clark Younggreen of Mount Vernon found the same fate against Boucher in 1:20.

Four other Golden Hawks advanced as runners-up including senior Mason Hartley at 145 who won a wrestleback over Walker Lawrence of Mount Vernon 7-6 to advance. Sophomore Cael Garvey did the same at 160, pinning Collin Hoskins of Center Point-Urbana in the third period. Ben Meader advanced as runner up at 170 through a three man bracket and Cory Allen was runner-up at 182. These six advance to Saturday’s district meet at Center Point-Urbana where they will vie for a spot at the state meet in Des Moines. Action begins at noon at CPU High School.
