The Iowa Legislative session continues, and Senator Rich Taylor created Senate Bill SF2035, the Home Baker Protection Bill. The idea of this bill came from an incident involving a woman who owned a home bakery in Burlington who was attacked and raped by a man pretending to be a fake customer’s husband. Taylor outlined the goal of this bill, “What the bill would do would say that you could, if you made these baked goods, you could deliver them somewhere away from your home in a public place and that you didn’t have to give out your address. I think that’s only reasonable. To me it was a no-brainer because I can go online and order anything I want basically off of eBay and I have no idea where they’re made, but if I want them I’ll get them. So if I’m allowed to do that, why couldn’t we protect these people, especially young women generally from having that sort of thing ever happen to anyone in Iowa.” Senator Chris Cournoyer is currently the chair of the state government committee, but has not created a sub-committee for the bill. Taylor fears it will not advance since he is in the minority party at the state capital.
