The contract law services provided to cities in Washington County by the sheriff’s office were approved by the Washington County Board of Supervisors. Each year the cities and the sheriff’s office agree to a contract for law enforcement services. The dollar amounts are based on each city’s assessed value, calls for service, and population.
Sheriff Jared Schneider said the Fiscal Year 2021 figures also include the increase in law enforcement in the northern part of the county, “The thing with Kalona, Riverside, and Wellman last year with the new deputy being brought on and the cost share for that there’s a amount figured into theirs beyond what the formula is, but that is the total for all of those communities.” Last year, a remote sheriff’s office was also established in Kalona.
The total costs for each city are Ainsworth $16,864, Brighton $23,930, Crawfordsville $7,068, Kalona $139,426, Riverside $97,330, Wellman $69,880, and West Chester $6,187. The City of Washington has its own police department for law enforcement.
