Mid-Prairie students were in for a surprise when they saw Superintendent Mark Schneider working the lunch line earlier in the month. Schneider was not handing over his superintendent duties, but instead was subbing for a high school cook. For three years, the Mid-Prairie School District has awarded 14 personal days to various staff members, and the principals step in and sub for that staff member. Schneider tells KCII News how helpful this initiative has been for discovering issues that need fixed, “Last Friday, I’m making sandwiches and the delivery person who delivers our groceries needed to make the high school delivery at the time I’m making the sandwiches. Well, the way our kitchen is configured, that back door needed to stay open so he could bring the groceries in. It took him 10 to 15 minutes in order to do that, while I’m back in the same aisle making sandwiches and it got awfully cold. Just yesterday I saw our nutrition director and I said, ‘You know, when we get a chance to remodel or renovate that high school kitchen, we need to figure out a way that people can deliver groceries without making the whole kitchen cold.’” Schneider’s next subbing positions will see him as the high school secretary and the custodian at West Elementary.
