A short-handed Washington boys’ basketball team was dealt their final blow of the season on Monday night when they traveled to Davenport Assumption and fell to Mount Pleasant 68-51 in a first round class 3A game.
As heard on KCII, the Demons were without two integral players with Kasen Bailey going down a few weeks back with an arm injury and 6’5’’ post player Brock Sobaski missing his first game due to a foot injury suffered last week. The smaller lineup didn’t look like it would faze them in the early going, as Trevor Quigley started the game with a splash from deep and Washington jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The script immediately flipped, as the Panthers went on a 15-1 run by slashing into the lane and causing turnovers in a full court press. It was an 18-12 Mount Pleasant lead at the end of one and they extended it out to 36-21 at the break. Desperate to keep their season afloat, the Demons came out aggressive in the third cutting the deficit to seven and got the Panthers on their heels. A couple big threes by Mount Pleasant stopped the run and Washington could never get any closer with the Panthers salting the game away at the line. Head Coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports what he thought the difference was. “I didn’t think we had the energy we normally do. With our short bench tonight it was asking a lot to play our up and down style. I thought Mount Pleasant played really well and took advantage of some things that we struggled with.” Trashaun Willis finished with a team-high 12 points and Quigley added 11.
Mount Pleasant beat the Demons for the first time this season and they improve to 12-10 with a meeting against Davenport Assumption looming on Thursday.
Washington concludes the season at 14-7 after claiming their first Southeast Conference title in 13 years. They say goodbye to six seniors in Quigley, Sobaski, Luke Turner, Ethan Hunt, Caleb Tanner, and Jadon Crawford.
