Strong winds with low humidity and dry vegetation caused the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning on Thursday. The extreme fire danger went from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday across southeast Iowa, including Washington County. The Red Flag Warning meant that the conditions could contribute to extreme fire behavior, where fires could easily and quickly get out of control and spread rapidly. During Red Flag Warnings outdoor burning is not recommended. Strong winds over 30 miles per hour were experienced.
