The Iowa Department of Public Safety is sharing advice on how Iowans can protect their cyber health and security, as they continue to take precautionary steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The IDPS advises that cybercriminals exploit concerns surrounding public health as they try to gain access to personal information. People are warned to exercise caution, as criminals may distribute emails with links to fraudulent websites with protective products or services, or fraudulent charities. Do not reveal person or financial information in an email. Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails. IDPS says to “be wary of emails appearing to be generated from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or experts claiming to have helpful information related to the virus” and instead visit the CDC, Iowa Department of Public Health, or World Health Organization websites or other state agencies directly. Also, review a charity’s authenticity before making donations.
