The cities of Kalona, Riverside, and Wellman pulled together to help their residents with food insecurity during a pop-up food pantry event on Saturday. Through their combined efforts, and with donations from various businesses and organizations, they were able to hand out 4,440 pounds of food to families in need. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh tells KCII News how proud he was of the efforts of the three towns, “I’m really proud of our three communities. I think we all work well together under normal circumstances. We’ve really had to think outside the box and really step up to try to meet some challenges and to let the public know we’re there to assist with a no questions asked formula. We don’t ask anything other than, ‘How many people do you need food for?’ I’m really proud of both Kelly [Litwiller] and Christine [Yancey] from Riverside and what they’ve been able to bring to the table to help with this. Also our elected officials have really kind of given us kind of a blank slate to go do good things.” Schlabaugh says they will continue to help citizens any way they can. He also says the three towns have access to baby formula and diapers for those who need such items. While the amount of supplies are not large, Schlabaugh advises parents and families who need those items to call their respective city halls to receive those items.
