Nearly 25,000 people filed initial unemployment claims in Iowa last week as the impact of COVID-19 continues. According to Iowa Workforce Development the number of continuing weekly unemployment claims for the week ending May 2nd was 181,358 people. For the same week, unemployment payments totaled $50,931,302.43. Manufacturing had the highest number of claims at 6,053, followed by self-employed at 4,010, and healthcare and social assistance at 2,988. Since April 4th a total of $439 million in benefits has been paid by the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation. And 15,612 Iowans received $10 million in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.
