A second successful food pantry will lead to another one this weekend. The cities of Kalona, Riverside, and Wellman distributed over 5,500 pounds of food on May 2nd in an effort to continue to help and support their community members. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says this food pantry is to help fill a need in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schlabaugh told the Kalona city council what the three cities plan on doing with the remaining resources, “I think our goal is to get it into June and see where the demand is. If there’s still a need, we’ll work to fill it. If it scales back, we’ll look to repurpose those funds and or make a commitment to the food banks, and split any cash balance we have. The goal is not for the communities to prosper, it’s to use what we need and then we’ll transfer over to the food banks what resources we have left when we are done.” The three cities will hold their next food pantry event this Saturday. Locations for this event will be announced later this week. If families or individuals have a food emergency that needs to be fulfilled before Saturday, they are encouraged to call their respective city halls or Schlabaugh.
