A dragon welcomes readers on the front window of the Washington Public Library as Summer Reading registration wraps up. This year’s fairytale theme is Get Fired Up for Summer Learning at Your Library. Librarian Jenisa Harris says it is important for children to keep reading when they’re away from school, “Children can lose up to a reading level just during the summer, especially this summer it’s so important with school not being in session for COVID-19. I know parents are doing the best they can to keep their kids learning and growing, and it’s just hard to keep them entertained. So, we want to partner with those parents and guardians and say here’s some fun ways we can help you keep that reading going this summer.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the format for summer reading will be a bit different to encourage social distancing. There will be online sessions as well as make and take craft bags and Bingo cards for activities.

People can register their children by calling the library at 653-2726 or send Harris an email at jenisa.harris@washington.lib.ia.us. Emails need to include the child’s name, the parent’s name, and the grade level the child completed this year. Registration is due by May 30th.
