We wrap our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2019-2020 academic year for area schools with the number one story that takes us to a historical season for the WACO basketball team.

Bringing almost everyone back from the 2018-2019 campaign meant high hopes for the Warriors this year, but expecting what they were able to accomplish this past winter would be a hard goal to attain for any program. The Warriors did it anyway. For the first time in school history, WACO ran the table throughout the regular season with a perfect 21-0 mark. The well-rounded group led the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division in assists, rebounds, field goal percentage, and three-point percentage en route to a league title. The Warriors had the ability to win big, but were also battle tested with five of their wins in single-digits. Six players were named to all conference teams including Nik Coble selected as player of the year in the south.

Coble reminisced about the special season. “Every single second of it was so much fun. We would go to class and talk with our classmates and teachers about the team because everyone was excited about it. We had a mission and to be able to accomplish a perfect regular season is awesome. All of the memories that we got to experience and the community having our backs the entire way is something I will never forget.”

After beating Winfield-Mt. Union 46-38 in the first round of the class 1A playoffs, the Warriors saw their season come to a close when they fell to New London 60-52 in a district semifinal and finish with a 22-1 record.
