The speed zones on West 5th in Washington may soon be changing. The city council recently approved the first reading of changes on West 5th Street. Police Chief Jim Lester said in a memo that vehicles along West 5th are currently traveling a lot faster than the posted 40 miles per hour speed limit.
Mayor Jaron Rosien explained the changes took into account the council member’s discussion and the recommendations of Chief Lester, “I know again we had discussion that went in a big circle, all the way around, and now it’s kind of landed here. We’re following the recommendation, as it’s listed it follows the recommendation of Chief Lester. Five miles an hour a couple of times, still on the far west side it is 40.”
From North Avenue D to North Avenue F the speed limit will be 25 miles per hour, it will then increase to 35 miles per hour going west through the curve, and will then be 40 miles per hour until reaching the stop sign at Highway 1. The council will have two more readings of the changes before it goes into effect.
That area has also seen the creation of a four-way stop at the intersection of North Avenue D and West 5th Street in the last month.
