The cities of Wellman, Riverside, and Kalona ended their pop up food pantries on a high note. On Saturday, 158 pre-made boxes were delivered to individuals with food insecurities caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Throughout all of the food pantry events held since April, over 25,000 pounds of food was handed out, and $10,000 of monetary donations from community members and businesses were given for this cause. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh told the Kalona City Council that even though this pop up food pantry is over, the three cities will have boxes filled with non-perishable food available for those with food emergencies in the three communities. If the need arises for another pop-up food pantry, Schlabaugh says the event can easily happen again. With area schools ending their free summer lunch programs, the three communities are willing and prepared to help kids in the communities with emergency boxes if needed.
