The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team dropped their season opener Monday in Kalona, falling to Northeast Goose Lake 11-0. The Rebels jumped out to an early lead scoring single runs in each of the first two innings. Northeast took control with a four run third, scored once more again in the fifth and four more times in the sixth. The Golden Hawks finished with one hit, off the bat of sophomore Rylee Vercande. Neveah Hildebrandt, Makenna McDonald and Audrey Morris all drove in a pair of runs for the Rebels. Eighth grader Madison Kluever recorded the win going all six innings. Abbi Patterson took the loss, going five and a third innings, giving up seven hits and six earned runs. Despite the loss, Mid-Prairie head coach Mallory McArtor spoke about the positives that she saw. “Going in we wanted to be aggressive at the plate. Our bats were there, we hit a lot of balls at people. For them it was the opposite, they seemed to find the gaps. We held them to just a run each their first two innings. Defensively I thought we did fine. First game jitters got to us it looked like. Overall I think we did ok, just need to be a little bit more focused and ready to go for the next.”
Mid-Prairie will next be in action Thursday when they host Tipton.
