Heavy rainfall and flooding has been seen in southeast Iowa. Flood warnings have been issued for the English River at Kalona through Wednesday morning, the Cedar River at Conesville until further notice, and for the Iowa River at Marengo until further notice. In Washington County a culvert was washed out. On Monday, Washington County Roads closed 290th Street between Coppock Road and Wayland Road until repairs can be made to the culvert.
Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen reminds people to not attempt to cross flooded roads, “Less than a foot of swift moving water can move a car, less than six inches move a person. So, especially if there’s current and usually if there’s flash flooding there is a current with that water because there’s so much water moving so quickly, trying to find its way downhill, so don’t go in the water.”
Washington has had more than double the normal amount of rain in the first three weeks of June with more than three inches since Friday. According to the National Weather Service, rain fell across southeast Iowa Monday with 1.3 inches before 6 a.m. in Brighton, two inches before 9 a.m. in Columbus Junction, and nearly two inches in Richmond before 7 a.m.
UPDATE 6/23 8:15 a.m.: Additional flood warnings have been issued including:
– the North Skunk River at Sigourney through Thursday evening
– the Iowa River at Wapello until further notice
– the Iowa River at Oakville until further notice
