Washington County and all of its contiguous counties, except Jefferson County, saw unemployment rates decrease from April to May. According to Iowa Workforce Development, the unemployment rate dropped from 9.8% in April in Washington County to 8.3% unemployed in May. Last month, Washington County had 2,200 people without work.
The highest unemployment rate in May in Iowa was in Des Moines County at 13.5%, with 2,650 people unemployed.
Washington County is part of the Iowa City Statistical Metropolitan Area, which saw an increase of 1,100 positions between April and May.
