Multiple complaints about fireworks were received by Washington County dispatch in the last four days. Complaints came in from Washington, Wellman, Kalona, Ainsworth and Riverside. As people prepare to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday they should be aware of local fireworks ordinances. In 2017 the state legislature approved the use and sale of fireworks in the state, with cities having the ability to set their own ordinances on when and if people can use them in city limits.

Per the City of Washington’s code, residents can discharge fireworks only between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 3rd and between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. on July 4th. The code also states that fireworks cannot be used in public spaces like parks and streets. Also, aerial shell kits, reloadable tubes, mine and shell devices are prohibited.

The City of Washington will be holding their annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Washington County Fairgrounds at dusk on Saturday, people are encouraged to practice social distancing. Hear patriotic music on KCII from 7-11 p.m. on July 3rd and 4th.
