The first round of the class 1A baseball districts got underway on Friday afternoon in Winfield with the Wolves opening the playoffs with Columbus Community and the home team squeaked out a 7-6 victory.
The Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a pair of frames, but the advantage shrunk to 4-3 after four. Both teams traded punches including a three run Wildcat sixth to tie it at 6-6, but a walk off in the seventh allowed WMU to advance. Christian Gerot and Nathan Crow each had a pair of hits and one RBI for the Wolves and Jacob Ford threw four innings on the hill giving up three runs on five hits and striking out seven. Evan Rees was productive for the Wildcats with two knocks and four runs driven in. Rees also tossed six frames giving up four earned tallies on five hits.
Columbus closed the season 0-9 and say goodbye to seniors Evan Rees and Gustavo Anaya. WMU finished the campaign 2-10 after turning around and falling to Burlington Notre Dame on Saturday by a 20-0 final in the district quarterfinal. The Wolves bid farewell to Dawson Bergthold, Christian Gerot, Nathan Crow, and Collin Simmons.
