March 14 was the day the individual state speech contest was supposed to be held, now over four months later, speech students will get the chance to perform. The Iowa High School Speech Association has given schools permission to hold makeup individual state speech contests. These contests will enforce strict COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, such as temperature checks, social distancing, mask use, and limited audience attendance. Mid-Prairie will hold their contest this Friday with three speech judges present. Mid-Prairie Speech Coach Christine Meader tells KCII News how she feels about her kids having the chance to perform again, “It’s historic. Unprecedented, historic. I think it’s going to be rewarding and I have full faith in my team in following the precautions. They’re very conscientious and kind people for the most part. I think this is going to be really great. It’s rewarding and a privilege to have the change to have the team to perform one more time and finish out their year.” Unlike traditional contests with teams from multiple schools, this weekend will only have Golden Hawks performing for the judges and their scores will determine all-state honors.
