While the new school year will not start for another month, families are able to receive food assistance during the summer. The Families First Coronavirus Response Act will give households $307.80 for each child who received food assistance during the school year to use for food now. Families who have received food assistance or are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since April have started to receive this money on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards this week. Those children who do not receive food assistance or SNAP benefits, but receive free and reduced price school meals will be eligible to receive a special Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) card. These cards will be mailed out to families by July 21. Any unused money on these cards will be removed one year after the card is issued.  Both EBT and P-EBT cards can be used to purchase food items such as fruit, meat, dairy, and bread wherever Food Assistance or SNAP food benefits are accepted.
