The No. 6 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team saw their season draw to a close Monday in the opening round of the 2020 state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines. The Hawks fell to No. 9 West Lyon of Inwood by a 13-3 score in six innings. After a scoreless first inning, West Lyon capitalized on shaky Golden Hawk control on the mound in the second. During the frame, Mid-Prairie walked five hitters, hit two other batters and had a defensive error while giving up five runs with the Wildcats sending 11 hitters to the plate. Down 5-0, Mid-Prairie saw West Lyon build their lead to 11-0 with four more runs in the third and a pair in the fourth. In total, Mid-Prairie pitching issued 11 walks and hit three batters. The Golden Hawks got on the board with a three run third, highlighted by a Will Cavanagh RBI double to shallow right that scored Kayden Reinier and Vinny Bowlin to get within 11-3. Mid-Prairie couldn’t stave off early elimination however, with West Lyon scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth to end the game.
West Lyon got their 13 runs on just seven hits, with eight of the nine in the Wildcat order recording at least one run. They were led by Josh Van Beek and his two for two day with four RBI. Cavanagh led Mid-Prairie at one for two with a pair of RBI. Keegan Gingerich and Brad Tornow each had a hit, Monte Slabaugh added an RBI. Jalyn Gramstad got the win for West Lyon going four innings, Keegan Gingerich took the loss for the Golden Hawks, wrapping up his day in the second frame. Mid-Prairie ends their season with a 15-4 overall record, share of the RVC championship and first state tournament appearance in 13 years. The Golden Hawks say good bye to seven seniors including Brad Tornow, Monte Slabaugh, Chris Miller, Abe Bender, Brayden Gingerich, Brody Miller and Colton Hobbs. West Lyon advances to Thursday’s class 2A semifinals to meet No. 1 Van Meter who threw a no-hitter to get by Treynor 1-0 on Monday.
