We continue our review of the last decade for Hillcrest Academy Raven athletics with a look at the 2012-13 school year.
Cody Miller and the Raven cross country team represented Hillcrest on the statewide stage in the fall. Miller qualified for the class 1A state meet in Fort Dodge and placed 23rd with his time of 17:11.
The Hillcrest boys basketball team fell one step shy of making their third straight appearance at the state tournament. The Ravens went 22-3 overall, finishing as 16-2 runners-up in the Superconference North. The Ravens were beaten by North Tama 55-46 in the substate final at Benton Community, less than 24 hours after a thrilling district championship overtime win over Lynnville-Sully at Mid-Prairie 58-53 after the game was moved back a day because of a snow storm. The Ravens again posted impressive numbers for the season. Peyton Thompson led the way offensively with 468 points, Cameron Gingerich poured in 392 and Dallas Nye 319. Led by that trio, the Ravens scored the seventh most points in 1A at 1,731, dished out the fifth most assists 466, notched the state’s third highest team shooting percentage at 53% and had the fourth highest free throw percentage at 71.6%.
The Hillcrest Volleyball team finished with a 20-15 overall record including a 6-3 mark in the Superconference North division. Kristin Davis led the Raven defense and the Superconference with 375 total digs, 10th most in class 1A. Olivia Yutzy posted 327 kills, second most in the Superconference and 10th in the state. Casey Perez put up 575 assists, third in the Superconference.
The Hillcrest boys soccer team finished with a 14-7 overall record. Reggie Hostetler led the Ravens with 19 goals, sixth most in class 1A. Peyton Thompson was fourth in 1A with 14 assists. Joel Shetler had 99 saves in goal with a 78% save percentage. Thursday will feature the 2013-14 academic year for athletics at Hillcrest Academy in our decade in review.
