The top sports stories countdown from the 2010s decade continues today when we take a look at area schools from the year 2013.

Winning the gold at the state track and field championships in Des Moines is exactly what Winfield-Mt. Union’s Cassie Kingery did in a pair of events. She clocked the fastest time in the girls 100m hurdles placing first in class 1A in 15.54 seconds. Kingery was also the anchor of the winning shuttle hurdle relay team in a time of 1:07.74. The rest of the relay team included Anna Crawford, Karlie Wade, and Emily Mathews. Other top events in the area included WACO’s Kevin Anderson second in the boys high jump and Highland’s Sam Dutton third in the girls high jump.

Longtime Lone Tree boys’ basketball coach Tom Squires added a state bid to his resume when the Lions qualified for the coveted tournament in Des Moines in the 2012-2013 winter. The Lions beat Dunkerton in the substate final 68-55 to advance to Wells Fargo where they were edged by Boyden-Hull 58-54 in the quarterfinal. The Lions finished 18-0 in the SEISC and 25-2 overall. Bryan Forbes had a monstrous senior campaign with 24 points and nine rebounds a night.

The Highland boys cross country team qualified for the class 1A state meet in Fort Dodge and finished 10th out of 15 teams. Seven Huskies competed led by junior Evan Mahler, as his time of 16:41 ranked third in the entire field. Sophomore Keiffer Sexton also cracked the top 20 in 18th place.

The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ golf program qualified for the state meet at Lake Panorama Golf Course and finished fourth out of eight teams in class 1A. Jake Edwards led the team in 10th with a 36-hole score of 175 and Brody Heying was 11th with 179 strokes.

The rich tradition of Highland softball continued that summer when they steamrolled the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. The Huskies were a perfect 18-0 in the league and finished 32-4 overall just missing out on a state appearance. Katie Springer dialed up a 1.51 ERA in 203 innings in the circle.
