KCII’s coverage of the top sports stories for area schools wraps up today with a look at the year 2019.
The Sigourney golf team celebrated a strong 2019 campaign competing at the state golf meet and they finished sixth out of eight teams. On the first day the Savages posted an 18-hole score of (+73) 357. Day two of the tournament was cancelled due to weather so Sigourney finished the season sixth out of eight teams in class 1A. Dustin Haines was in a tie for 18th with (+13) 84 and Cole Weber tied for 20th with (+14) 85.
Three individuals brought home silver medals from their work at the Blue Oval for the state track and field championships. Winfield-Mt. Union’s Brandon Snowden had the second fastest time in the boys’ 200m, Sigourney’s Summer Barthelman was second in the girls’ 400m hurdles, and Emily Yahnke of Highland finished second in the girls’ long jump.
A few area grapplers finished on the podium in February of 2019. Mason Dye of Sigourney placed fifth at 113 lbs, Columbus Community/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jarod Kadel was sixth at 138 lbs, and Brady Hahn of Highland was sixth at 145 lbs.
The WACO boys’ basketball team had a strong 2018-2019 campaign that fell a few points shy of a state appearance. The Warriors were 17-5 overall including a 9-4 mark in the SEISC to place third in the division. In a substate final against Alburnett, the two teams battled it out in overtime with the Pirates coming out victorious 60-54. Nik Coble led the team on the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds a night.
