The unofficial kickoff to the fall football season happened Friday night at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman with the 2020 edition of the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks taking the field for their annual gator scrimmage. Admission to the event is a freewill donation of Gatorade for the team.
In years past, the Hawks have scrimmaged another team, this year due to COVID-19 and logistical challenges with scheduling, the Golden Hawks made this an inter-squad event. The night started with 7 on 7 drills for the skills positions for offense and defense while linemen on both sides of the ball drilled on the other side of the field. The night concluded with first and second string offense and defense competing against one another in a traditional scrimmage format. After things finished, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about what he saw and what the focus will be this week to get ready for the season opener. “I think in general this is a good thing to do under the lights, in-front of a crowd. You get a chance to simulate the atmosphere. We did have some missed assignments, but we got better as it went on. We did a good job tonight running the football and getting a lot of guys carries. I thought overall we did a good job competing and that was the goal coming in. This propels us into next week, and we definitely to improve because Sigourney is going to be a great team. We need to have our best game for next week.”
Mid-Prairie opens the year Friday with a rivalry game against Sigourney-Keota. You can hear all of the action between the Hawks and the Cobras live on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 6:30 and kickoff at 7p.m.
