The long awaited start to the season for the Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team ends tomorrow when they open the new campaign with a road trip to Keokuk.

A veteran Wolves group hits the court this year, as they lost only one player from the 2019 team that went 18-13. Seven seniors lead the charge including Jenna Buffington and her 156 kills last season. Setter Kayla Edwards is back after 348 assists and Kyndal Townsley managed 338 digs.

WMU Head Coach Dave Pieart tells KCII Sports a few keys for his team in order to have a successful season. “We need to stay healthy whether that be the virus or injuries. We need to stay mentally focused. There is going to be a lot of changes this year in their social lives and school due to the virus. The team’s that can work through that will be the most successful this fall. It will be a mental thing for us.”

The Chiefs finished third in the Southeast Conference last fall with a 9-19 overall mark. Lexi Garretson is the top defender returning with 232 digs and Miracle Ailes recorded 117 kills.

The 2020 season begins tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. in Keokuk.
