Show me a more impressive resume through two weeks of the season and I’ll show you a liar. The #4 Washington football team followed last week’s win over 4A power Bettendorf with an encore performance last night by defeating #9 in 2A Solon 33-18.

As heard on KCII, the Demon offense got out to a much quicker start than week one by scoring three first half touchdowns including Wyatt Stout scoring from two and 35 yards out. Trashaun Willis had the other score on a three-yard rushing play, but the highlight of the drive was Willis going beast mode for a 60-yard scamper where the senior broke numerous would be tacklers in what should have been a sack. That touchdown pushed a 14-10 Demon advantage to 21-10 heading to half.

Solon looked poised to claw their way back when they opened the third quarter with an eight minute drive, but failed to score on a missed field goal. The Demon defense was stingy when they needed to be only allowing a combined three points on three redzone trips for the Spartans. The backbreaker came on the subsequent Demon drive when Willis found Spencer Sotelo from 19 yards out that reached pay dirt and Washington could smell victory. The cherry on top came with five minutes left when the senior quarterback added one more rushing score that secured Washington’s first win over Solon since 2015.

Head Coach James Harris had high praise for the offense. “Our offensive line was exceptional and our pass protection really improved. Trashaun running the ball was huge for us and our receivers had some big plays with the touchdown to Spencer and Zac Stout having big third down conversions. Coach Don Miksch and the rest of the staff put together an incredible plan and the players came out here and looked really sharp.”

Willis finished eight of 13 through the air for 149 yards and added 95 yards on the ground while being responsible for three touchdowns. Wyatt Stout had 88 yards and the two scores. Willis registered 13 tackles for a defense that gave up just 95 yards on the ground and Jacob Miller had eight tackles.

Washington moves to 2-0 and they start up district play on Friday when they host Fort Madison for Heroes Night.
