On an evening to honor the heroes of the community on 9/11, the Washington football team opens district play today when they host Fort Madison for the Annual Heroes Night.
The Demons put together an impressive non-district resume with wins over Bettendorf and Solon to start up the campaign. The offense broke out last week in their 33-18 win over Solon including quarterback Trashaun Willis racking up 244 yards of total offense with three touchdowns. He also has 11 tackles to lead a defense that has allowed only one touchdown in the red zone all year and that came in the waning moments against the Spartans.
The Bloodhounds are an improved bunch sitting at 2-0 including a 23-8 victory over West Burlington last week. The offense is about 50/50 pass to run and Will Larson has completed 57% of his throws for 249 yards and two scores. Fort Madison has kept their opponents under 230 yards of total offense in each of their first two contests.
Washington Head Coach James Harris knows that the wet conditions will play a factor. “We need to play clean football by being penalty and turnover free. It is going to be a sloppy night so taking care of the ball is going to be a big thing tonight. I want to recognize our offensive line and the progress they have made. Roy Carter, Kael Adam, Lincoln Hanson, Jack Strabala, and Brayden Harvey were studs last week.”
This is the sixth meeting in as many years between these teams with Washington winning all of them including a 36-7 affair in 2019.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. tonight at Case Field and listen to all of the action on FM 106.1 KCII starting with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. Face coverings are recommended for adults and are required for those in the student section. KCII’s coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Football Friday Preview Show by breaking down all the games in Southeast Iowa.
