An increase in wages for elected officials in the City of Washington is being discussed by the city council. At their recent meeting, a workshop was held on the topic. Mayor Jaron Rosien said the last time wages were examined was in 2003. Currently it is $12,000 per year for the mayor and $50 per meeting for the council. Rosien is suggesting $75 per meeting for council members and $18,000 annually for the mayor. Any changes wouldn’t apply until 2022, after the next city council elections.
Rosien said why it should be considered for the seven positions, “I think it shows foresight that’s necessary. And I’m still thankful for the wage that I’m paid as it helps offset what takes me away from my other work, and it requires additional expense. It allows for that. And I think it’s appropriate since it’s been 17 years, it’s appropriate for the next batch to move that needle.” It was said that doing so would help other people consider public service if it would offset costs for work or babysitters.
City Administrator Brent Hinson said such raises would be doable without raising the city’s tax levy. The item will be put on a future agenda for official consideration.
