Huge district implications are on the line in Mount Pleasant tonight, as the Washington football team makes the short trip south to face the Panthers in week four action.
These two teams are no strangers to high stakes meetings including a memorable 64-61 slugfest last year in 2019 that propelled the Demons to the playoffs and sent the Panthers home. While the postseason is not on the line in 2020, the winner of tonight’s contest will be the frontrunner to take the district crown. The Demons are a perfect 3-0 and coming off of a 29-7 victory over Fort Madison last week. The Demon defense has been stellar giving up just 11 points a night led by Zayne Laws with 14 tackles and the team has forced seven takeaways.
Mount Pleasant sits at 2-1 after a 21-6 win over Fairfield that followed a 47-28 loss to Tipton. After giving up an eye-popping 467 yards on the ground to Tipton, the Panthers righted the ship in a big way giving up negative two yards on the ground in week three. Jack Johnson is their feature back offensively with 465 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
Demon Head Coach James Harris thinks size when he thinks of the Panthers. “They are enormous up front and have three guys that are 300 lbs. Henry Lutovsky is going to the University of Nebraska and is an elite offensive lineman. Cooper Pullis is a strong kid and Jack Schmmelpfennig is also a monster. Their offensive line definitely stands out about them.”
Washington has had the upper hand in the last nine matchups together, but the rivalry has been decided by one possession in each of the last three years.
The district showdown gets started at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Mount Pleasant and listen to the game on 106.1 KCII. The pregame show gets underway at 7 p.m. and the KCII Football Friday Preview Show that analyzes all Southeast Iowa games starts at 6 p.m.
