Winfield-Mt. Union High School will be one of six sites for pool play in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference volleyball tournament this evening with Columbus being the opponent.
Mediapolis was supposed to be the third team in the round-robin tournament, but they had to cancel so the Wolves and Wildcats will compete straight up with a finals trip on the line. WMU has won five straight and come into the contest 14-4 overall with a 4-0 mark in the league. Jenna Buffington has been the engine that goes offensively with 157 kills. Kyndal Townsley has 141 digs and Keely Malone has registered 163 assists. Columbus is 7-11 overall including 0-4 in the SEISC and they are coming off of being swept by Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday. Olivia Carrier leads the offense with 115 kills, Jobie Lekwa has 146 assists, and Emma Milder 239 digs. These two teams met up last week with the Wolves sweeping all three sets.
WMU Head Coach Dave Pieart tells KCII Sports this was a day they have had circled for a while. “One of our goals this season was to make day two of the conference tournament. We haven’t been there for four years and the last couple conference tournaments we have not played well. We have been really focused to make sure we play well in this one and have a chance to play Saturday.”
The single best of three match will get underway at 5 p.m. tonight in Winfield. The winner will advance to the conference tournament finals on Saturday in Burlington.
