September has been recognized by the Department of Homeland Security as National Emergency Preparedness Month. Each September, families and communities are invited to review their emergency plans in the case of natural or man-made disasters striking close to home. This year’s theme is “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.” This week, DHS asks families to sit down with their children and go over what to do if they are separated following a disaster, like a storm or fire, and reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved. Have a plan in place to reconnect at a certain spot.
Other actions families can take this month is making a plan to communicate before, during, and after a disaster, build a supply and medical kit for each person in the home, and understanding the potential risk of disasters and insurance coverage. To better prepare for severe winter weather this year, listen to AM and FM KCII for the latest cancellations, delays, and weather information.
