Three cars collided in a wreck in Riverside on Sunday. According to the Washington County Communications Office, the wreck happened at 1:51 p.m. in the 3000 block of Highway 22 in Riverside, west of Highway 218. The westbound lane of Highway 22 was shut down due to one of the vehicles coming to rest in the roadway. One person was taken by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital.
The three drivers were Jerry Smith of Illinois, John Henry Downer Jr. of Riverside, and a juvenile.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined that the Downer vehicle was stopped with a left turn signal activated, waiting to turn left into the Dollar General parking lot. The vehicle driven by the juvenile was westbound on Highway 22 when he took his eyes off the road for an electronic device, and struck the Downer vehicle. The juvenile’s vehicle spun and hit the third vehicle which was eastbound on Highway 22.
Two vehicles were towed from the scene. The juvenile driver has been charged with failure to stop in a clear and assured distance, and use of an electronic communication device.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Washington County Ambulance, Riverside Fire Department, and Riverside QRS.
