The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team is on the road for the second straight week tonight when they travel to Belle Plaine to meet the Plainsmen. This game was originally scheduled to be a district contest against Davis County but due to COVID concerns for the Mustangs, the Golden Hawks were forced to find another opponent. Mid-Prairie comes into the game at .500 for the year with a 2-2 record after a 24-8 loss at No. 2 Williamsburg last week. Vinny Bowlin led Mid-Prairie in the loss to the Raiders with more than 300 yards of total offense and a touchdown pass to Clarke Latcham. For the season, Bowlin leads Mid-Prairie under center at 32 of 70 for 44a yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s connected with Cain Brown eight times for 96 yards to lead the receiving corps. On the ground, Kayden Reinier has 60 attempts for 654 yards and 11 touchdowns. Linebacker Justice Jones leads the Golden Hawk defense with 26 and a half tackles, five for loss and a sack. The Mid-Prairie defense has forced four turnovers this year.
Belle Plaine is 4-1 on the year. The Plainsmen are ranked No. 12 in the latest class A poll from the Iowa Associated Press. A week ago they blasted North Mahaska on the road 52-14, behind 338 rushing yards and five touchdowns from Luke DeMeulenaere. On the season, BP is led by Ben DeMeulenaere under center at 19 of 33 for 171 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has connected with Luke DeMeulenaere and Jaxon Kressley eight times each this year for a combined 150 yards and two touchdowns. Luke DeMeulenaere has 125 carries 897 yards and 10 touchdowns to lead the ground game. On defense, Chase Wickwire has 33 tackles, seven for loss and a sack and a half to lead the way. The Plainsmen have forced eight turnovers. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about the match up. “They’ve got quite a few skill kids who are pretty good. Their running back is at nearly 900 yards and his brother is the quarterback and also pretty athletic. They’re pretty much a smash mouth football team that likes to run the ball but they do it out of a bunch of different looks and that really tests the defense. Our kids are going to have to play hard and play well. I look for our kids to bounce back after a tough loss last week and be positive.”
These two teams have never met on the football field. You can hear all of the action live from Belle Plaine High School tonight on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 6:30 and kickoff at 7p.m.
