A Mid-Prairie Agriculture teacher has been named the 2019-2020 Golden Owl Iowa Ag Teacher of the Year by the Iowa FFA Foundation. Elsa Schmidt originally won the southeast district Golden Owl award as an outstanding agriculture educator in January along with a $500 monetary prize. By winning the district award, she became eligible for the Iowa Ag Teacher of the Year award. Schmidt was one of 253 agriculture educators vying for the grand prize, but on Tuesday, she was honored as the lone Iowa Agricultural Educator of the Year. She also received the coveted Golden Owl trophy, and a $3,000 grand prize for her education endeavors. Schmidt teaches plant science, agricultural science, agriculture, food, and natural resources, and agricultural science animal, and is the FFA Advisor at Mid-Prairie High School.
