halloween-2017

The cities of Kalona, Riverside, and Wellman will limit Halloween activities this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Iowa Department of Public Health released guidance saying some traditional Halloween activities, such as trick-or-treating and haunted houses, are considered high risk for contracting COVID-19 and should be avoided. The IDPH recommends if individuals participate in trick-or-treating to create individually wrapped goodie bags so families can grab their treats and socially distance themselves from others. Residents can then wave to trick-or-treaters through a window while they grab the goodies outside. The three cities will still hold trick-or-treating. Residents should signal whether or not they are handing out treats by leaving their outside lights on or off Halloween night. The three cities will not hold city-sponsored in-person events, but instead will have virtual activities like a costume contest and coloring contest.  If you’re looking for Halloween guidance, click here ideas from the Harvard Global Health Institute.
